Welcome to my blog!

This blog is an honest look at what life is like for this particular American convert to Islam. We're taught in Islam to cover our sins, to not air them, for fear of lessening the severity of sinning. In this blog, I may relate past indiscretions from time to time. This isn't to make light of them, but in the interest of educating Muslims and non-Muslims alike as to the realities of life as an American convert, I present my mistakes honestly. I make no excuses for them, nor do I claim that they were okay to make. I am not perfect, and I make no pretenses as to that. If others can learn from my past, know that Islam, and religion in general, is open for people no matter what mistakes they've made, then I will gladly air my sins when needed.

Of dream jobs and housewifery.

My dream is to be an animator for Pixar.  I've always wanted to do something digital art-oriented, be it freelance work like Marta Dahlig, or animating.  But working at Pixar has been my dream since 2009, when they fulfilled a dying child's dream of seeing "Up" before she died.

That link's going to make you cry.  A lot.

Go ahead, get some tissues.  A lot of them.  Then click on the link and read it all.

It's oaky to cry.  Take some time.  I'll wait.

So that's why I --- oh, you're still sniffling?  I'm sorry.  Let me know when you're done.

Ready?

Oaky.  I know, I know, I bawled my eyes out, too.  I still start crying when I tell people the story.

Deep breath.  We'll get through this together.

So that's why I want to work at Pixar.  They're an amazing company, who actually treat their employees well --- beyond well.  They have a full cafeteria that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner for their employees, for free.  Yeah.  Free.  Keeps the employees working longer, but damn, that's smart.  Treat your employees well, your employees will give it all back and more.  Animators get their own little hut-rooms to decorate however they want, with fully stocked mini-bars (I'd go for juice & SoBe, lol), and they keep their creative team together for every project, rather than hiring a new team of freelancers for each project and then cutting them loose, like other studios.  No wonder they've never had a flop.

What?  You need more tissues?  Oaky, this is the internet, I'll be here when you get back.

So I really want to work for Pixar.  I'm in my 4th quarter out of 8, working on my Associate's degree, and when I'm in my 7th quarter I'm going to apply for an internship with Pixar, and transfer to the Bay Area ITT campus.  Pixar's based in Emeryville, and there's an ITT Tech, like, a 10-minute drive away or less.  Can you tell I'm from California?

Oaky, never mind, it's more like half an hour away.  But still!  That's not bad!  It'll be cheaper to live in Concord & commute to Emeryville, it looks like, but I'll have to take into consideration gas money.  Will I be at Pixar 5 days a week?  How will I work my Pixar schedule around my class schedule?  If the bulk of my time will be spent in Emeryville, it'll be cheaper in the long run to live there.

In any case, I think I'll need to be married and have that extra income before I'll be able to live in either city, which brings me to my contradiction:

I really want to be a housewife.

Like, really.  I'm not sure why, but it appeals to me.  Of course, I'm also thinking that I'd get to wear those super-cute 50's dresses whilst being a housewife.  But, and feminists the world over are going to start screaming in outrage, I find traditional gender roles appealing.  Or maybe I just want to be spoiled well taken care of.  I want to cook, do crafts for the home, make my husband clean and take out the trash ... and I want to make movies with Pixar at the same time.

Sigh.  If only Pixar animators could work from home ...  Maybe I'll just have a househusband who works from home.  That'd work, too.  I'd make him wear his own 50's dresses, because I don't want him stretching out mine. :D

And whilst we're on the topic of marital bliss, go check out and fall in love with Sabrina at SliceOfLemon.com.  You won't be disappointed.  :)  Not that I'm saying she makes The Boss dress in 50's women's clothing.  Just that she's blissfully married and is awesome.

Her wedding anniversary is exactly on my 4-month anniversary of converting!  That makes us connected, somehow.

  2. Thank you so much, Marrissa! It's been a trial at times, and will continue to be a trial at times, but by God, this is the most spiritually content that I've ever been, and also the longest I've ever spent in a spiritual faith, save one (but I majorly slacked in that one, so I'm not sure that it counts :P ).

Also, congratulations on your little Peanut! She'll come out beautiful and strong, insha'Allah. We called my younger sister Da Boo-Boo because my Dad & stepmom didn't want to know if she was a boy or a girl, lol. ^_^
